AES Gener Won the Avonni Award with our Innovative Virtual Reservoir Battery Solution

Santiago, November 4, 2020.- AES Gener obtained the first place in the category of Energy, Electricity Companies, under the framework of the Avonni 2020 awards thanks to its Virtual Reservoir project. This innovative solution is the world’s first energy storage system with a lithium-ion battery bank that is installed in a run-of-the-river hydroelectric power plant.
The Virtual Reservoir works at the 178 MW Alfalfal I power plant, located in the commune of San José de Maipo, and is a great revolution because it stores in the batteries the energy generated by falling waters during off-peak hours so that it is delivered to the electricity system when it is most needed.
The pilot initiative of 10 MW for 5 hours consists of a total of 3,894 industrial lithium-ion batteries.
The awards ceremony was held today in the communications courtyard of TVN and the Vice President of Operations, Javier Giorgio, was present on behalf of AES Gener.
Among the special features of Virtual Reservoir are the optimization of the energy coming from hydroelectric power plants, as well as the increase in the power output of the generating plant.
